Lighting Programming

Coming originally from a background in touring theatre and dance, much of Alex’s early career was spent sat in front of Strand boards of various vintages (Gemini, Galaxy and later the 500 series).

As intelligent lighting started to become more and more common on all types of show, he gained experience on a wide variety of consoles, starting with Avolites but quickly progressing onto the Hog2 and then the GrandMA series.

These days the GrandMA series 2 is Alex’s weapon of choice but he is equally at home in front of many other consoles, including the Wholehog. Alex continues to work for a large number of renowned lighting designers in a wide variety of genres including Television, Theatre and Corporate.

As a designer in his own right, Alex is easily able to interpret the designers wishes, whilst efficiently dealing with the complexities of handling a modern moving light rig. However he is also very aware of the need to keep the two disciplines separate and maintains a professional approach to client relationships at all times.

Recent programming projects include the Isalmic Solidarity Games opening and closing ceremonies for LD Adam Bassett, programming alongside Ben Hornshaw, and set up and programming the current Ed Sheeran world tour for LD Mark Cunniffe, the show being looked after on tour by Matt Jones. In theatre Alex has recently worked with Ben Cracknell on the first Pantomime to be shown at the London Palladium in over 20 years, as well as the UK tours of 'Le cage' and 'The Wedding SInger'.

Upcoming Projects include the 2018 Olivier awards from the Royal Albert Hall and the new UK touring production of 'Rock of Ages'.

Multimedia Programming

As the visual elements of productions have converged, the task of programming media servers and associated equipment falls more and more into the remit of the lighting programmer. Alex has embraced this technology and regularly uses all types of media server, including Catalyst, Hippo and mBox.

The last few years have seen more projects as a specific video programmer. Most recently these have included the European leg of Metalllica's Black Album stadium tour for ML Studio, and 'I dreamed a dream' - a new musical touring the UK telling the story of Susan Boyle's rise to fame, for video designer Jack James.

Recent video and multimedia projects include:

Grease European Tour 2017-18 (Video Designer Chris Lensing)

APServices owns and maintains a WYSIWYG license and is able to offer this either as a service or on a rental basis. A sophisticated portable WYSIWYG 'suite' is available for rental, either with or without an operator. Drawings and renderings can be produced and large format printing up to A0 is also available.

Control System Design & Rental

APServices is also able to design and administer complex networking systems for lighting and control. This can include lighting consoles, media servers and other elements such as audio and interactive technologies. Stability and reliability is key to all designs and online backup and redundancy mechanisms can be incorporated into systems of any size.

In 2007 APservices started to invest in the GrandMA range and is now able to supply consoles, NSPs, networking equipment and backup systems for a wide variety of shows and events - from individual pieces of equipment on a dry hire basis to complete control systems, including backup options.

APServices recently supplied the entire control system for the UK premier of Avatar, covering the entire Leicester Square area including two cinemas. Based around the GrandMA platform, this provided the ability to operate from multiple points around the square, including inside the cinemas. A facility for wireless control around the square was provided for focussing and programming. Multiple backup systems were deployed to ensure that this high profile media event went without a hitch.
